Ara’Kus on Broadway

Aeterno Elementum ~ November 4th, 2011 at Broadway Performance Hall ~ Seattle

by Tobias MacRobie

Thanks for making it magickal!

Aeterno Elementum comes to Seattle!

Aeterno Elementum at the Broadway Performance Hall, November 4th and 5th, 2011On November 4th and 5th, 2011 Ara’Kus Productions will bring heavy metal opera to the stage at the Broadway Performance Hall in downtown Seattle. Aeterno Elementum combines dark, atmospheric, story-driven performance theater with Ara’Kus’ signature style of symphonic, operatic heavy metal to create an experience that is greater than the sum of it’s parts.

Aeterno Elementum tells the story of a world not entirely unlike our own which has descended into darkness, and of it’s inevitable and violent purification. Featuring fire dancing, aerial performance, acrobatic martial artists, fully armed and armored knights in large scale combat, and a cast of highly talented actors and musicians of all types, this is a spectacle that must be witnessed in order to be fully understood.

On each night, doors open at 7:00pm, show begins at 8:00pm. Tickets will be $25 online and at the door, but seats are limited, so we recommend purchasing early.

Register here to receive vouchers for discounted tickets and regular updates about the show and everything Ara’Kus.

Thanks again from the Ara’Kus Productions crew.  We’ll see you in Seattle.

Disc of the Week

Ara’Kus’ debut album, Aeterno Elementum, is Disc of the Week on Metal Eternal. Or rather “†††Disco de la Semana†††” as it is listed on the site, because the whole site is in Spanish.

We’re huge in Spain.

New Video!

I just put up a new video by Travis Thieme in the Video section.

Aeterno Elementum Lyrics

I’ve had quite a lot of people asking me about the lyrics to Aeterno Elementum so I’ve put up a new page with a lyric sheet for the full album, you can find it under the “Media” tab, or click here!

Hades Machine vs. Ara’Kus and the battle for Ariana’s wedding

What is this Hades Machine?

Hades Machine, a zombie apocalypse punk band, is the brain child of singer Jake Hades is also the second band of Ara’Kus guitar player Randy Haines (me)!

Both bands have been asked to play at Club Motor on the 11th of June for photographer Ariana Wing’s wedding fundraiser show. This will be the first ever public performance of Hades Machine and more of an old school style show for Ara’Kus, as we won’t have all the crazy theatrics of our normal shows. That’s not to say it won’t be killer, we’ll have the choir with us in all their glory, and Asraiya will be spinning fire on a couple of our songs.

Plus double the Randy!

Club Motor
1950 1st Ave. S.
Seattle, WA 98134

All Ages
Tickets are $10.00
Proceeds go to Ariana and Alex’s wedding!

Top stuff (guitar solos)

A few years ago a friend asked me what I would consider the ten best guitar solos in rock music. It was not an easy task, aside from the difficulty in comparing the guitarists and the way they played on various guitar solos, there was also the question of which ones are considered rock – Is Bonnie Raitt rock? Rory Gallagher? Does metal count?

As the conversation and research continued we also started talking about the best albums and best guitarists. In the end I compiled some lists and all of the material is based on one common criteria, my opinion.

I’m not asking anyone to agree with these lists, I’m just putting out what I think about it and I have not put them in any particular order. In fact, I probably wouldn’t even say that they are my top ten, just among my favorites, and these lists are by no means exhaustive. So let’s start with those guitar solos (click on each one for more info):

Let It Be – George Harrison (The Beatles)

Diary of a Madman – Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)

Revelations (Mother Earth) – Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)

Eruption – Eddie Van Halen

Comfortably Numb – David Gilmore (Pink Floyd)

Cliffs of Dover – Eric Johnson

Scuttle Buttin’ – Stevie Ray Vaughn

La Villa Strangiato – Alex Lifeson (Rush)

Black Star – Yngwie Malmsteen

Unknown – Unknown

On performing

I recently came across this quote from Steve Rapson:

A good performer jumps on stage, looks out at the audience, and thinks, “Here I am!” A great performer jumps on stage, looks out at the audience, and thinks, “There you are!”

It’s been vaguely bothering me and I finally realized why, I don’t know where it puts me on his scale, but when I go on stage I look out at the audience and I think, “Here we are!”

(Note: I’ve looked around Steve’s site a little and he seems to have some very good advice for performing musicians, the above is not intended as an argument against his statement, just as another point of view!)

New Audition Listings

We’ve just recently added listings for position openings within Ara’Kus Productions.  Currently we’re looking for Chorus Members, 3 exciting acting roles and a Marketing Coordinator.  Stop by the Join Ara’Kus Productions page to check them out and apply!

Keep checking back for more updates over the next few weeks and months.  There’s a lot of exciting developments on the horizon, and we’ll be making some more announcements soon!

What a show!

Well, it’s been about a week since the show and none of us have gotten on here to update anything and that’s mostly because we were recovering from the show. Most of us were either in the grips of, or coming down with, some junk that was going around as we prepared for and did this production.

Personally, for about three days after the show I was pretty much in bed watching back episodes of Doctor Who because I was just too wiped out to do anything else, I know JJ came down with something nasty the day after the show as well, but I’m not sure whether he watched Doctor Who.

But wow, what a show! First, thank you to all who were a part of it, whether you were part of that incredible crowd we had or were a part of the production – Thank you.

Our two new girls, Vivian and Erica, surpassed our expectations. They were really thrown in to the fire, considering a show of this size was their introduction to performing with a metal band. The “Creepy Effin’ Monks” were, well, effin creepy, and that’s compliment coming from me. All of the actresses and actors, the Seattle Knights, aerials, strings, dancers, sound engineer, light crew and back stage help were freakin’ amazing. We worked through a few minor technical issues and everyone seemed pleased with the end result.

It still kind of twists our minds up that we have gotten this far from an initial idea two years ago when we first had the idea to move out of the bar scene and start doing concert productions instead of the normal stuff. It’s been an interesting journey, and we truly thank everyone that has been a part of it.

We have not yet scheduled our next show, but we are discussing what our next move is, and we hope that you are all there to take it with us!

Erica, Vivian and Whitney!

As many of you may already know, our show at Studio 7 in September marked soprano Whitney Burdge’s final performance with Ara’Kus. She had been with us for about a year and it was quite a growing process for her to step so far away from any kind of music she had done before. Whitney has gone over to London where she has been accepted in to a school for architecture and is now an official member of the London Philharmonic choir. We wish her all the best.

Through a somewhat unique and slightly tortuous audition process we saw many singers on a multitude of levels while looking for a Whitney replacement. We finally narrowed our field down to two talented sopranos, and each had so many good qualities that after a brief talk we decided to bring them both on.

We are very excited to be working with Vivian Lee and Erica Wood Row who, though coming from different singing backgrounds, have shown to be a great asset to the sound of Ara’Kus. We are really looking forward to their first performance with us on the 19th at the Historic Everett Theatre.

Please come out to catch these two class acts in their Ara’Kus debut and to see this new production which will include the entire Aeterno Elementum story, plus two (possibly three) never before heard Ara’Kus pieces, a performance by the Seattle Knights, aerials, actors and all the (un)usual insanity that is an Ara’Kus show!
